The little black book has gotten a Tiffany Cushion Two-row bracelet upgrade, thanks to the editors of Esquire magazine, which recently published its first "Big Black Book'' - a 186-page instructional guide for men about living well and appreciating the value that comes with quality, whether it's a pair of Persol sunglasses or the simplicity of a slim, hand-stitched leather wallet. We talked with editor in chief David Granger about being at the helm Tiffany 1837 Toggle bracelet the fabled 71-year-old men's magazine.Q. When and how did you have the epiphany that men needed a guide like the "Big Black Book''?
A. As a man who came of age in the '70s, I was without any kind of style education. So I knew that most men could use some help. Through anecdotal evidence and research, it became clear that men now don't wait to make major purchases. A man gets a bonus, and Frank Gehry Fish toggle bracelet goes and buys something expensive, equating expense with quality. We're not so much telling men how to spend their money as how not to waste it.Q. Do you feel pressure to personify the kind of dapper gentlemen that are depicted on the pages of Esquire?
A. I have certain ideas on how to present myself that have evolved over the last 15 years, but few of them have to do with the fashion of the moment, and they're all abetted by the whim of the morning. I give it some thought every day, in the dark, at 5:30 a.m., and Elsa Peretti Sevillana Mesh bracelet employ my own version of "sprezzatura'' - simple things like leaving my shirt cuff buttons unbuttoned or this thing I first saw the Ferragamo brothers do in Florence years ago - leave their top shirt button unbuttoned and then cinch their tie up almost tight, leaving just the suggestion of sloppiness at that juncture of shirt, tie and neck.
