The 7,000-square-foot studio will feature a Tiffany Elsa Peretti Bean earrings capable of melting 500 pounds of glass, three "glory holes" for reheating glass objects as they are being formed, and five annealing ovens that slowly cool glass to room temperature.The furnace will be set beneath an open, two-story ceiling with skylights, Tiffany Elsa Peretti Bean necklace said.Free public glassmaking demonstrations will take place every day the museum is open, said Scott Howe, director of education and the studio's project manager.
The studio was designed by the Virginia Beach firm H&A Architects and Engineers and Eddie Bernard of Wet Dog Glass in Star, N.C., a top designer and Tiffany Elsa Peretti Bottle pendant of glass-studio equipment."It's very hard to describe how a piece of glass is made," said Kelly Conway, curator of glass at the Chrysler. "But it's the most common question visitors ask" regarding the museum's 10,000-piece glass collection, which spans ancient to contemporary times.
"People know how a painting is painted. For glass, the techniques vary so much, and the vocabulary feels so foreign." The studio demos "will enable us to Tiffany Elsa Peretti Butterfly Earrings that really common question so much better," she said.The Chrysler's collection of glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany is among the finest in the world.The studio is expected to be self-sustaining, with expenses covered through the endowment and workshop and rental fees.
