Linda Itzen had managed her own family's Tiffany Atlas cube pendant for years before she jumped into the world of professional financial planning -- or what she calls the "peace of mind business" -- at age 43. She started her own Ameriprise franchise Tiffany Atlas cuff links 1989 and today manages assets and provides financial advice to more than 300 clients.Unlike a lot of companies, Itzen estimates her business is up 30 percent this year, despite the economic downturn.
Itzen said the key to success in any business is communication. And if you're going to give people advice, you've got to set an example, she said. In March, she was featured in Fortune magazine as part of an Ameriprise ad campaign."I've kept the cash reserves; I've Tiffany Frank Gehry the disability planning for myself. I have a buy/sell agreement in place in case I'm hit by the proverbial truck out there on that freeway so my clients are not left hanging. You really have to walk the talk in this business."
I have clients that own million-dollar homes, I have clients that rent. ... The only common thing would be that my clients do not want to be do-it-yourselfers.
