Weslaco East coach Chris Kromer lists Darcy Tiffany box lock pendant at 5-feet, 11-inches. He's fudging that slightly for her sake."I don't think girls like to be called 6-foot tall, but when I look at her I see a 6-footer," Kromer said of his senior captain.When most opposing coaches get a glimpse of her, they see a center. They'd be wrong. Cuellar is thriving in her new position -- shooting guard."We graduated seven players last year and most Paloma's Zellige earrings them were guards," Kromer said. "I just didn't feel like I could get the ball in her hands enough if I put her on the block. It was more of a necessity than anything, but it's paid off."
Cuellar ranks among the Valley leaders in points (14.0), assists (3.7), rebounds (9.0) and steals (4.7). She's the only player listed in all Atlas drop earrings categories, according to statistics that coaches have submitted to RGVSports.com. Cuellar was Valley Freedom Newspapers' newcomer of the year a season ago after she averaged 8.6 points and 11.5 rebounds as a center.
"I knew we had no starting returning guards," Cuellar said. "I didn't expect (the position to change), but I was ready for it."Kromer knew that Cuellar could handle playing off-guard because of her quick feet and athletic ability. Kromer said she's a strong Tiffany 1837 Ring and has quick hands too. He toyed with the idea of moving her to guard last season, but the Lady Wildcats were deep at that position so he didn't bother."She's taller than most girls, but she's not clumsy," Kromer said. "She's very athletic. It was just a matter of her adapting to the new position."
